Our goal is the long-term success of the student in an academic environment as opposed to automatic placement or promotion based on age. This means that depending on the child, some students may be able to place in advanced grades whereas other students may be admitted to a lower grade than anticipated.
(Standards for all grades are cumulative.)
Kindergarten (5 by Fall, not by August)
It is not necessary for a Kindergarten student to have all of the following mastered but these would be good things to work on with your child who will be enrolled.
- hold and use a pencil correctly
- write name
- recite alphabet
- count to 10
- recognize letters
1st Grade (6 by Fall)
- use scissors, tie shoes, and zip jacket
- write/name and sound-out alphabet
- read simple three/four letter words
- write numbers in order from 0 to 30
- count by 1’s to 50; by 5’s and 10’s to 100
- recognize/name 1 and 2 digit numbers
2nd Grade (7 by Fall)
- fluently read and comprehend Frog and Toad are Friends
- print alphabet (upper and lower case)
- write a complete sentence
- quickly add and subtract 1 and 2 digit problems
3rd Grade (8 by Fall)
- fluently read Charlotte’s Web
- answer comprehension questions in complete sentences
- add and subtract problems with borrowing and carrying
- 100 addition and 100 subtraction facts in 7 minutes each
- read a clock and count money
4th Grade (9 by Fall)
- fluently read The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
- label parts of speech: subj, adj, adv, prep, op, and verb
- master
third-grade math concepts (Classical Math 3 or Saxon 3)
5th Grade (10 by Fall)
- fluently read and summarize The Last Battle
- master fourth-grade math concepts (Saxon 54)
6th Grade (11 by Fall)
- fluently read and summarize The Hobbit
- label parts of speech: direct and indirect object
- master
fifth-grade math concepts (Saxon 65)
